My Style Lookbook - 5/30/12

I've never been one to shy away from prints so when I saw this dress, I was immediately drawn to it. There are a lot of people who will tell you that it's not a great idea to wear anything too busy but I LOVE almost anything with a print!

This print in a classic black and white color combo almost reminded me of old school television static so it felt kind of edgy and I couldn't bring myself to leave it in the store. The cut was super flattering, it cinched in at the waist with a slim braided belt and it was long enough to wear to work while still being short enough where I could feel sexy. I paired it with a pair of cage heels to match the edgy vibe, a couple of gold bangles, chandelier earrings and added a pair of retro white sunglasses to finish it off.

Summertime in the Sun

It's here! Memorial Day is finally here and with it comes the official kickoff for the summer season. I don't know about you but I'm gearing up for beaches, cookouts and amusement parks!

With the onset of the summer season comes more exposure to the sun and while I love a healthy dose of Vitamin D as much as the next girl and I've actually learned to appreciate a tan, I'm smart enough to not ignore all the warnings that you have to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays.

I have SUPER oily skin on my face, especially in the summer and I've found that this Neutrogena Clear Face sunblock has been the best for protection from the sun without clogging up my pores and causing breakouts. I even took it on a cruise to the Caribbean and a day full day at a water park and it held up beautifully. Not surprising since I've been using different Neutrogena products since I was eight years old. Obviously they've learned a little something over the years about skin care.

When it comes to sunblock for the body, I personally prefer a spray over a lotion because it's lighter and doesn't leave a white film on the skin. I've been using this sunblock by Coppertone for a few years now. And don't forget your lips. They can burn too! I use this lip balm with SPF by Banana Boat. All of my sunblock is at bare minimum SPF 50.

The moral of the story my fellow fluffy girls, is however you choose to protect yourselves, please cover up. You'll be happy you did later on when your skin doesn't look like leather like that so called "Tan Mom of New Jersey". And my fluffy girls of color, don't think this doesn't apply to you. We can burn too. (Trust me. I'm speaking from personal experience!)

Happy Fun in the Sun time ladies !!!

Spring Into Reinvention!

One thing that can definitely be said about Hollywood is that it's a town full of people who are constantly reinventing themselves. Think about the different looks that Madonna has had over the years. Or Jennifer Lopez who's gone from Fly Girl to Fashion Icon. It's a great example for the rest of us that if you're unhappy with your look, you always have the option to change it!

I myself have recently lost eighty pounds which is pretty awesome but it also leaves me with the problem of a closet full of clothing that no longer fits. So I've found myself having to replace nearly every item of clothing I own.

It's an interesting thing to have to start from square one in your wardrobe. It really allows you to stop and take stock of who you are style-wise and the image that you want to project. Are you a girly girl who loves all things frilly and flirty or a rocker chick who favors studs and leather? Are you the classic girl who loves things that are elegant and timeless or the boho-chic modern day flower child? I personally have always been a girl who follows the trends. If it's new and I can find a fit that flatters, call me all over it!

The idea of a complete fashion overhaul is exciting, but it's also pretty daunting because I'm a girl on a budget. I don't want to spend a lot of money on any one item because in my weight loss journey I really don't know how long I'm going to actually be able to fit it. So here's my mission: To redo my wardrobe with affordable fashion. I'm looking to purchase each item for $30.00 or less. That's more real world budget for most of us anyway. So join me on my journey and hopefully you'll pick up a couple good ideas along the way!!!

What's your style?

An Evil Eye A Day...

Okay, so I have a new obsession. I am head over heels in LOVE with the evil eye charms that seem to be all over the place lately. Have they been around forever and I'm only just now noticing them? Am I the Johnny-come-lately on this trend? If so, I have some serious catching up to do and I am more than willing to do it! The evil eye is absolutely EVERYWHERE in Hollywood! Everyone from reality tv stars Drita D'Avanzo (Mob Wives) and Melissa Gorga (Real Housewives of New Jersey) to stylista and fashion designer extraordinaire Nicole Richie is rocking them.
My personal favorite is this sick House of Harlow 1960 bracelet that I finally, after lusting after it forever just ordered in 14kgold with black Pave' Stones. I don't know that it really works, but I'm super excited for it to get here to see. Haters beware!!!

Trend Spotlight - Peplum

Dress - Forever 21+; Shoes - Me Too via Marshalls; Sunglasses - Marc by Marc Jacobs

While poring through the fashion mags, I noticed that peplum detailing was everywhere for the Spring/Summer season. I thought that it was really pretty and feminine and was super flattering on the size two models and celebrities but that it couldn’t possible flatter your average sized girl, much less a fluffy girl like myself.

I happened to walked into Forever 21 (I’m lucky enough to live in a place that actually carries their plus-sized line in-store.) and low and behold one of the first things I see is a peplum dress in a super pretty poppy red with black crochet detail on top and a black pencil skirted bottom. I figured why not try it on just for kicks to see how it fits and BINGO I have a new favorite dress. It's fitted enough to show off my figure but still flattering. I’m big in my midsection with that dreaded lower pooch and the peplum over the skirt covers it up perfectly! Plus the pencil skirt added curves where I don’t usually have them! Super feminine, ultrachic and could easily go from day to evening. You definitely have a convert in me!

I also found this sexy black and white version for only $22.00 at Dots.com for the girls who are bold enough to wear horizontal stripes

And in my search for peplum details, I've found that ASOS CURVE is king! Check out this dress that incorporates two of Spring's hottest trends in one: Peplum and Florals!
